Early Christians and Jews often cited Scripture with reference to a book, author, or textual event but with little further specificity. Jesus, for example, in referencing the account of Moses, refers to the text simply with the phrase “at the bush [passage]” (Mark 12:26; Luke 20:37, my translation).
